How to keep fit and active this winter

With the nights long and the days short, finding the time – and the inclination – to exercise can be tough even for the most dedicated among us.

Though motivation may be hard to come by, staying fit and active over the winter months will not only help you to stay in shape, it can also help to drive away those winter blues, keeping you feeling great throughout the year.

Be realistic

When the frost is thick on the roads and your car is refusing to start, an early morning exercise session will be the last thing that you feel like.

So be realistic. You’re probably not going to do a 5km run before work every day or get your sweat on in a per-dawn gym session. So plan your exercise schedule carefully, with the winter in mind, and you should find it’s a lot easier to stick to.

Get an exercise buddy

A lot of people find that exercising with a friend is a lot easier than going solo, and during the winter it can be an especially good motivator.
Have a look at cheap cell phone plans to make getting in touch with your exercise buddies even easier, and you’ll be pounding the pavements before you know it.

Avoid seasonal temptations

As all dieters will know, a big part of staying in shape is avoiding food temptations, and with office parties, Christmas get-together s and New Year to contend with, winter can be an especially tough time for abstinence.

Again, the important thing is to be realistic. You probably will have a few mince pies and roast potatoes over the Christmas period, and it’s important to enjoy them; just try to avoid overeating and overindulgence.

Join a gym

If you hate the cold, there are few things worse than exercising outside in the middle of winter. So to help keep your fitness plan on track, look into a temporary gym membership to get you through the worst of the cold.
Having a warm, dry place to exercise can make a huge difference to your motivation levels, and will really help you to maintain your fitness throughout the winter.
Staying fit and active when it’s cold and wet outside isn’t always easy, but with a bit of dedication, motivation and companionship, you should be able to keep your exercise regime up well into the New Year.
